Behind the Photo 2

Back with another dive into one of my favorite photos!

This photo, shot on December 24, 2018, was part of a story piece on his seven concussions as a result of a lifelong motocross career. The one that finally ended that career was when he was in a wreck while riding on the highway in between two of our tracks, where he was slammed against the asphalt and forced to walk away from the sport forever. I wanted the photo to represent that moment, of him leaving his career on the highway, and I thought that his helmet fit that perfectly (especially, because, you know, helmet, head, concussion, you get it).

The image was shot with a 50mm f1.8, wide open, at 1/1600 of a second, ISO 100. In post production I darkened the foreground, added some vibrance to make the yellows and oranges pop, lifted the blacks, and warmed the image up just a little bit.

In all, I think the photo tells the story that it's trying to tell. The riderless bike left abandoned on the highway, with the helmet rolled away, gives the viewer just enough information to be able to interpret the story for themselves.
